The first smartphone I owned was an iPhone and I instantly fell in love. It was a match made in heaven. I remember as if it was yesterday… my iPhone 4 with rounded app icons, easy to use interface speedy operating system and seamless access to all my favourite apps and websites … Ahhh.
Fast forward six years and now the smartphone market is FULL of high tech, high processor and… high prices! Apple, it seems is no longer content with world domination, but now they have their sights on trying to change our habits to conform to their style and way of life! Sorry apple, that’s the last straw for me thanks.
I mean, I love the Apple Company and their products are amazing even if they are overpriced, although I have now switched to android, I still feel that the IOS software is capable of running much quicker. The only difference now is that my Samsung s6 has a quad core processor, yeah ok IPhone can run quicker with less, but does it actually matter anymore? Not with this kind of power!
So what led me down this path? It was a build-up of different things really. The fact that the IOS system allows for minimal customization played a small part, the idea that Apple had plans to change their headphone phone port size to be different from the rest of the world was another, but the nail in the coffin for me… was error 53.
For those of you unfamiliar with error 53, this was the software update that apple put in place for a brief period that caused an awful amount of pain for a lot of people. Basically, this software update rendered any iPhone 5s and above useless if their home button had been replaced by anyone other than Apple.
Ok, so I understand the reasoning for this, they say it was a security issue but I mean how insecure could it make it? Not insecure enough for apple to keep it in place after the public went mental over it, which begs the question were there other motives?
I have been repairing my own mobile phones for as long as I can remember and just the thought of not being able to do that was enough for me to say ok Apple… I am done here. I no longer require your services thank you for a great six years… I bid you good day! Don’t get me wrong, this was an amicable split I have no hard feelings toward you, I just feel our time is over and our relationship has run its course. We are different people now, you want your things and I want mine, which by the way is having control over the things that I buy with my own money, thank you very much.
So I told my friend, I said “Hey, had enough mate, getting an android for the first time” (He is Mr walking advert for Apple by the way, Apple watch, IPhone… the lot!) He said, “What? No! No way man, why?” So I began to explain my frustrations with IPhones and the whole, I want more control over my phone.
At that point, I was still on the fence and wasn’t sure which way to go. But he helped me with that in just a few sentences when he said, “So yeah, OK, maybe you can customise it a little… Apart from that name me one thing you can do on android, you cannot do on IOS?” I said, “Yeah… exactly!”
Ok, back in the day it was worth the extra cash having an IPhone, but the speed and capabilities of the high end smartphones these days don’t differ that much… but the price still does.
And so I ran off into the night with my shiny new Samsung Galaxy S6 never to look back at my IPhone 6S.
P.S I still have an IPad!
